Here’s what India needs to become a fully developed nation:
1. Education opportunities for all. Until the poorest of the poor have a chance to raise their station by getting an education, they are generally doomed to the same lives as their parents.
2. Economic opportunities for all. Because there are so many people – especially in the cities, there simply is not enough work to give people the opportunities to improve their quality of life. Even with all the western companies moving to India, there are still tens (if not hundreds) of millions without the opportunities for jobs with a decent wage.
3. Improved infrastructure, especially in terms of public sanitation. Even within the cities, there are many people living without clean water, functional sewage systems, and other services. These services may not be as vital away from the large population centers where the population density is much lower, but in the cities it creates an ongoing public health situation.
While many in the US and Europe may debate about how much the government should do in these areas, the simple fact is most of us don’t struggle with these basic issues. Even when we are unemployed there are government safety nets to keep us from falling too far. And minimum standards for sanitation issues ensure this isn’t a major concern for most.
By no means do I claim to be an expert on India, but all you have to do is zoom in on any major city with Google Earth to see the sprawling slums that stretch for miles. And then when you see pictures from the ground level of poverty is excruciatingly obvious.

There are a lot of very wealthy people in India, but there are an awful lot of very poor people. A developed country needs a strong social system that encourages the poor out of poverty and allows them opportunities. Even though some developed countries (e.g. the USA) do not care very much for their poor, there have been times in the past that they have, and there is some ‘minimum’ living standard that the vast majority of people fit within.
India has too many poor people to be a truly developed nation in the near future. Compare with China, where people are guaranteed a minimum living standard. This is the major impediment to India’s ‘development’

Development.
developed country include advanced country, industrialized country, more developed country, more economically developed country, Global North country, first world country, and post-industrial country. The term industrialized country may be somewhat ambiguous, as industrialization is an ongoing process that is hard to define. The term MEDC is one used by modern geographers to specifically describe the status of the countries referred to: more economically developed. The first industrialised country was England, followed by Germany, France, the remainder of the United Kingdom and other Western European countries.

Your country has some huge problems.
A population that is 1.1 billion and rapidly going to overtake China as the most populated country on the planet since your birthrate is 3 to 4 times more then China and the USA.
Your middle class maybe growing in numbers, but your poor class is growing by percentages and if things are not reversed, your middle class will go through significant reductions and your rich will have the lions share of the wealth with a vast poor class. All the makings for a revolution.
Your income disparity is widening. The rich are getting richer, the poor poorer.
You have increasing corruption at the lowest to highest levels of business to government.
Your society is not as stable as it could be.
International investing is not nearly as high as it could be if your government and society were more stable.
All of which means that either your government and society needs to make big inroads into increasing equality, reducing corruption and population growth, or suffer the problems of eventual stagnation and social unrest. Which is not going to be healthy for your economics and investment.
EDIT
Kurt,
The people in China are not guaranteed a minimum living standard. That was true in the past, but no longer. A lot has changed in China in the last 30 years.
